The establishment of an information and communication technology (ICT) hub in Nasrec, south of Johannesburg, may soon become a reality as the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) beds down its plans for positioning the Gauteng City Region as a “smart city” and a leader in the knowledge economy.

Premier David Makhura on Monday said the “final phase” of planning for the bulk infrastructure and land consolidation required for the multidisciplinary development, which would incorporate several components of ICT and multimedia, was under way.

The GPG aimed to rapidly unlock the development of the ICT hub and integrate it with the five-year-old Soweto Empowerment Zone, in Diepsloot.

The cost and timelines for the new park were not disclosed.

First announced in 2012 by then-Economic Development MEC Qedani Mahlangu, the Gauteng ICT Smart City project was expected to house a film and animation studio, an ICT products manufacturing centre, a multimedia and research and training centre and a green ICT centre.

A feasibility study had also examined the potential for a data centre, a switching centre, a connectivity centre and the commercial use of the ICT park.
