JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Dual-listed Waterberg Coal Company (WCC), which earlier this month acquired 45.88%, or 1.63-billion shares of Firestone Energy, has appointed Dr Mathews Phosa as a nonexecutive director.

A lawyer by profession, Phosa was elected the first Premier of Mpumalanga in 1994, after which he went on to occupy the role of treasurer general within the executive committee of the African National Congress (ANC) between 2007 and 2012, while serving as a member of the National Executive Committee of the party.

He has also served as a business consultant for various local and international businesses since 1999 and currently holds chairperson, vice chairperson and board member positions at several prominent South African institutions and companies.

WCC executive director Stephen Miller said the appointment reflected the evolution of the coal producer as it embarked on the development of its Waterberg coal project.

“We are delighted to have Dr Phosa join our board with his wealth of experience and qualifications and we look forward to working with him on the very exciting Waterberg coal project,” he commented.
