The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has, since inception, funded the construction of 188 bulk national water and wastewater projects, Minister Nomvula Mokonyane has outlined in a written Parliamentary response to a question by the Democratic Alliance (DA).

Of these, 77 were under construction, 15 were in the design and tender stage, 47 were at the feasibility stage and 49 had been completed, she noted.

The Minister further revealed in a written response to a separate Parliamentary query by the DA that her department had allocated R2.5-million for the refurbishment of wastewater treatment and bulk water facilities in the Makana municipality, in the Eastern Cape, which had experienced ongoing water supply issues.

“My department is participating fully in an intergovernmental plan to restore effective water services to the residents of Makana. There is both a high-level and technical task team responding to the water crisis intervention project,” outlined Mokonyane.

She added that a business plan to build additional capacity for the treatment of sewage has been prepared for Municipal Infrastructure Grant funding, while the Eastern Cape Development Trust had committed a further R100-million for refurbishment work.
