JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Northam Platinum has confirmed that drilling operations at the Zondereinde mine resumed on Tuesday morning, following a three-week disruption by rock-drill operators (RDOs) demanding higher monthly production bonuses.

Northam noted that an agreement was reached between mine management and the National Union of Mineworkers on Monday.

In terms of the agreement, the about 580 RDOs, who have been going underground but refusing to drill since April 2, would receive return-to-work compensation, comprising a one-off payment equivalent to 50% of their basic wages for the duration of the strike period and R2 000.

This was despite total production losses for the three weeks amounting to 16 000 oz of platinum-group metals and gold with a current value of about R192-million.
