Nigeria-based refractory products manufacturer Eunaco Refractionaries is ready to open operations in South Africa, after establishing a joint venture with a South African company in Richards Bay.

The ceramic heat containment products manufacturer would operate as J Manuel Supplies and Logistics and manufacture products from February 2014.

CEO Chudi Obinwa said the company chose South Africa owing to its strategic location in terms of access to trade from Asia, as well as its available expertise and technology.

“We are looking at importing raw material from China, manufacturing our goods in South Africa and exporting them to Nigeria, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire and Benin,” he noted.

Obinwa said manufacturing his products in South Africa would cost less than doing so in Nigeria, while he was also reassured by the support and incentives offered by the local government to foreign companies wanting to invest in the country.

“Deputy Trade and Industry Minister Elizabeth Thabethe promised to avail officials from her department who will help us access these incentives so that we can benefit from government support in South Africa. Accessing these incentives will assist us in keeping our prices low and, in that way, make it easier for us to conquer the market,” he said.

At last week’s Outward Selling and Investment mission, in Nigeria, Thabethe encouraged Nigerian companies to invest in South Africa and urged them to apply for incentives that government had created to support foreign companies investing in the country.
