New ministerial team to look at immigration regulations – SAfrican Cabinet
A team of ministers are to be assembled to address concerns raised about new immigration regulations, including those relating to travelling with minors, a statement from the South African cabinet said on Thursday.
In the media statement following President Jacob Zuma’s fortnightly meeting with his ministers, cabinet said it was briefed on the implementation of the new regulations on travelling with children which came into effect on June 1.
In the statement, it was noted that “Cabinet has, however, noted the views expressed by various sectors. In order to hear these views, cabinet has resolved to set up a team of ministers from both the economic and security clusters”.
This team, according to the statement, “is expected to discuss and engage with these concerns with the aim of finding ways to address the unintended consequences brought about by the implementation of these regulations.” The ministerial team would be led by home affairs minister, Malusi Gigaba.
Cabinet further said in its statement, “in addition, the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration will also continue with its work to relook at all the aspects relating to migrants that are in the country. This work will assist to provide synergy between migration and our laws.”
