New innovation hub to grace Dube TradePort
The construction of a new innovation hub in the heart of the Dube TradePort, in Durban, was set to kick off in March 2016, as Dube TradePort Corporation sealed a R160-million lease agreement with Eureka Capital.
Eureka Capital planned to develop a seven-storey 21 500 m² building that would be home to the innovation hub and an office block.
The innovation hub, which was expected to create more than 60 permanent jobs, was aimed at accelerating the growth of knowledge-intensive enterprises, providing established businesses and start-ups with an incubation facility that brought together academics, researchers, entrepreneurs and venture capitalists under one roof.
The centre would host a range of disciplines, including electronics, information and communication technology, bioscience, advanced manufacturing sectors, sustainable energy and infrastructure and community development projects throughout South Africa.
“There are going to be many innovations coming out of the innovation hub,” Eureka Capital CEO Thobani Msimang said, adding that it filled a gap for entrepreneurs to incubate their ideas and where people with relevant industry experience could take those ideas to the next level through a controlled developmental regime.
The innovation hub would be supported by Dube iConnect, which covered the entire Dube TradePort precinct with the latest fibre-optic technology and two Tier 3 data centres providing local cloud computing services using the latest in virtualisation software.
“As South Africans, we are excited about this opportunity because it brings exactly what a developing economy needs, [such as] strategic focus on the development of emerging business in respect of skills, adoption and creation of new technologies,” said Dube TradePort Corporation CEO Saxen van Coller.
The total investment in the innovation hub was expected to grow to R250-million as the centre became operational.
