Construction group Murray & Roberts has completed a year without a fatal incident and, for the current financial year to date, has reached a record lost-time injury frequency rate of 0.81 across the group.

"The health and safety of our employees, contractors and other stakeholders is of extreme importance to us. Some time ago, we set a challenging goal of achieving zero fatalities in a year, across all of our operating entities - a goal which was achieved [on April 17]," group CE Henry Laas commented.

In 2010, the group appointed health and safety management company DuPont Sustainable Solutions to undertake a comprehensive evaluation of its South African operations against best practice standards.

The company said the assessment created an increased level of health and safety awareness within the organisation that assisted in establishing a roadmap to achieving safety goals.

"We will continue to build a culture of excellence, emphasising the interdependency of safety and productive work, regardless of where we operate across the world," Laas noted.
