PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Junior Blackthorn Resources would submit its application for a mining licence at the Mumbwa copper project, in Zambia, before the end of the year, and would launch a definitive feasibility study on the Kitumba deposit by the start of 2014.

Speaking at the second day of the Africa Downunder conference, Blackthorn CEO Tony De Santis noted that the prefeasibility study (PFS) for the Kitumba project would likely be released by the end of next week.

The PFS had initially been scheduled for release during July this year.

The study, which incorporated a mineral resource estimate of 87.6-million tonnes, grading 1.17% copper and 0.03 g/t gold, would investigate the viability of an underground operation, said De Santis.

The junior miner started the PFS on the flagship deposit, which formed part of Blackthorn’s Mumbwa copper project, in January, following the successful completion of a scoping study last year.

Meanwhile, additional assay results from further drilling was also expected in the near future, which would lead Blackthorn to reassess its exploration plans for the Kitumba resource, as well as elsewhere on the Mumbwa project.
