MTN Uganda to deploy East Africa’s first LTE network
MTN Uganda announced on Monday that it would deploy a Long-Term Evolution (LTE) network in Uganda this year, which would make it the first service provider to offer the technology in the East Africa region.
Widely known as 4G, LTE is a standard for the wireless communication of high-speed data for mobile phones and data terminals and would provide African clients with improved data access and a network speed of up to 100 Mb/s.
“MTN remains committed to the development of the information and communications technology sector and the Ugandan economy. LTE becomes the new standard determining the level of technology development and offering substantially faster data speed than other technologies,” MTN Uganda CEO Mazen Mroué said in a statement.
MTN Uganda recently extended its fibre network by laying optical fibre and building regional switching centres in several regions of the country.
The company planned to invest some $70-million in the expansion of network infrastructure in 2013 to support mobile subscriber growth and the roll-out of additional products and digital solutions.
In the last six months, MTN Uganda rolled out 81 new base transmission sites to new coverage areas, while commissioning additional capacity sites to enhance the quality of network services.
This brought its total number of base transmission sites to 1 100 at the end of 2012.
The company has also made backhaul links expansion and enhancements to the Mombasa submarine cables in a bid to further improve global connectivity.
The World Bank recently linked a 10% increase in broadband penetration in Africa to a 1.3% improvement in overall economic growth.
