MTN SA regains mild traction after first-half subscriber loss
Telecommunications group MTN added 233 000 subscribers during the third quarter, after losing subscribers to competitors during the first half of the year amid an aggressive price war.
The group, which fell behind after a slow response to the ongoing price wars and mobile termination rate cuts in the industry, said its South African operations had shown some progress in the three months ended September 30.
As MTN delivered more competitive product offerings and focused marketing campaigns, the number of subscribers in South Africa reached 25.2-million by the end of the quarter, MTN group president and CEO Sifiso Dabengwa said on Thursday.
Data remained the largest contributor to revenue growth, increasing 16.6% year-on-year, with data users rising to 13.9-million.
However, lower effective voice tariffs and slower-than-expected subscriber growth resulted in a year-on-year decline in overall revenue growth.
Conditions were expected to remain challenging during the rest of this year, said Dabengwa.
Overall, the group, which operates in 22 countries, grew its subscriber base to 203.8-million during the quarter under review, with Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon and Uganda, besides others, delivering satisfactory performances.
MTN Irancell, Sudan and Ivory Coast reported marginal declines in their subscriber base, while Syria increased its subscriber base by 5.1% to 5.8-million in an “extremely challenging environment”.
