Telecommunications group MTN has lost the bid for one of two licences to roll out and operate a telecommunications network in Myanmar.

MTN, in partnership with Myanmar-based Amara Communications and M1 Telecom, had competed with 11 other bidders for the opportunity to develop the currently underdeveloped network in the nation.

Norway’s Telenor and, according to media reports, Qatar Telecom, which changed its name this week to Ooredoo, were, on Thursday, awarded telecommunications licences by the Telecommunications Operator Tender Evaluation and Selection Committee.

“MTN is disappointed to miss out on the opportunity to operate a telecommunications network in Myanmar,” the company said in a statement, but added that the country remained an attractive market and MTN would review other options as they became available.

Telenor planned to rapidly roll out a modern mobile network using high-speed packet access and long-term-evolution-ready technologies and aimed to achieve nationwide coverage in Myanmar within five years.

The Norway-based operator would commercially offer the “full range” of mobile services, both voice and data, from 2014.

“Myanmar will be an important pillar in our growth strategy and we are fully committed to responsibly leverage our group competencies to provide access to mobile communications services for the people of Myanmar,” Telenor president and CEO Jon Fredrik Baksaas said in a statement on Thursday.

MTN had, in its bid, proposed the roll-out of nationwide coverage of high-quality voice, data, Internet applications and mobile banking services, besides others. MTN and its partners had also planned to offer training through the MTN Academy.

Telenor said it would now enter into final discussions with the Myanmar authorities to acquire the telecommunications licence within the next few months.
