Telecommunications group MTN has promoted MTN South Africa (SA) CEO Karel Pienaar to MTN Group chief strategy officer, while MTN SA CFO and acting MTN Business chief business officer Zunaid Bulbulia will take up the position of MTN SA CEO.

Pienaar’s appointment will see the group’s mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and strategy functions being separated, with Khumo Shuenyane to focus on M&A and international business development.

As MTN Group chief strategy officer, Pienaar will be responsible for overseeing MTN strategy across its 22 operations. A founding member of MTN, he has held various leadership roles within the group, including as group chief technology and information officer and CEO of MTN Nigeria.

Bulbulia, another MTN founding member, has 19 years’ experience in the telecommunications industry. He was appointed CFO of MTN SA in 2005.

As CEO of the local operations, he will be tasked with bolstering the group’s competitive position in the South African market.

MTN Group president and CEO Sifiso Dabengwa said Pienaar and Bulbulia were experienced executives who understood MTN’s business priorities and challenges. “We look forward to their continued contribution to MTN’s growth in their new roles.”

They will both serve on the MTN Group executive committee.
