PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Iron-ore miner Atlas Iron on Thursday said that it would likely refer its Mt Webber mine, in Western Australia, to its board by the end of June this year, for a final development decision, after receiving the final state and federal environmental approvals.

Mt Webber forms part of Atlas’ Horizon One projects, along with the Mt Dove and Abydos mines.

The project would be developed in stages, initially producing some three-million tons a year of direct shipping ore material, which would be expanded to a six-million-ton-a-year operation. First production has been targeted for December this year.

Meanwhile, Atlas reported on Thursday that it was on track to produce at a rate of ten-million tons a year by the September quarter of this year, as it progressed its near-term development projects.

Commissioning at the Abydos mine would start early in the new financial year, the miner said, while the parallel commissioning of the new facilities at Utah Point stockyard two would facilitate shipments from the expanded production base.

Atlas was expected to ship some 2.2-million tons during the June quarter.

“Atlas has a proven ability to develop highly competitive mining operations with low capital and operating costs,” said MD Ken Brinsden.

“Our near-term expansion projects are on time and on budget, leading to increased production from the mines, matched with expanded port capacity. We are now well on our way to ten-million tons a year,” he added.
