The African Development Bank (AfDB) has appointed a Mott MacDonald-led consortium as technical adviser to the New Partnership for Africa’s Development’s (Nepad’s) Infrastructure Project Preparation Facility (IPPF).

The global management, engineering and development consultancy, along with fellow consultant Sofreco, would direct the initiative as it identified, assessed and prioritised regional infrastructure projects in Africa.

The consortium, working under a framework agreement, would provide IPPF with the skills required to define, assess the feasibility of, design and structure commercial projects.

IPPF, which was established in 2004 to assist African countries, regional economic com- munities, specialised infrastructure development agencies and related institutions in the implementation of projects, provides grants through bilateral agencies and the AfDB.

To date, it has leveraged over £30-million in funding to prepare infrastructure projects worth £900-million, the company pointed out.

IPPF supported projects such as the rehabilitation and upgrading of the North-South Corridor linking South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania; a 1 500 MW hydro- power plant in Mozambique; a dedicated African satellite aerial navigation system; and improved access from landlocked countries to sea ports, besides others.
