Mineworker killed, three injured in Kroondal shooting
RUSTENBURG – A mineworker was shot dead and three others seriously wounded during a shooting at the Bambanani Shaft of the Aquarius Platinum in Kroondal near Rustenburg on Wednesday, the company said.
“I can confirm that there was a shooting outside Bambanani shaft, the cause of which is unclear. One person has died, and three people have been seriously injured,” said Charmane Russell.
“Management has condemned the incident and is working with the SAPS [South African Police Service] on the matter.”
Workers said they saw men sitting outside the shaft, and when more workers arrived the men started shooting randomly.
“We saw them sitting at the parking bays, when more workers arrived they gunmen walked behind one man and shot him at point blank range, other people were injured. The gunmen stopped only when they ran out of bullets,” said a woman.
“I am still shocked, I was near them, when I heard gun shot I went down hoping I will not be a target.”
