Mediclinic International plc, the diversified private healthcare service group, on 17 April 2020 provided a 2020 Full-year Trading and Covid-19 Update ahead of the publication of the Group’s results for the year ended 31 March 2020.
In the update, the Company announced that the Group Chief Executive Officer (“CEO”) and Group Chief Financial Officer are voluntarily donating 30% of their salaries for the next three months to support South Africa’s establishment of a Solidarity Fund aimed at assisting the most vulnerable South Africans. Similarly, the divisional CEOs and all non-executive Directors of the Board are voluntarily donating 30% of their salaries or fees for the next three months to benefit charities with similar aims in the countries in which Mediclinic has a presence.
In addition to the information contained in the update, the remaining members of Mediclinic Group Executive Committee are voluntarily donating similar amounts for the next three months to charities of their choice in their respective countries of residence.
Commenting on his decision, Dr van Der Merwe said: "As a leading private healthcare group, Mediclinic is at the forefront of the Covid-19 pandemic and we are working closely with governments and local regulators to support the different initiatives being implemented across geographies. We recognise the important role we play in the fight against the pandemic and have resolved to support the example set by the President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, who announced that he and his entire cabinet would donate a third of their salaries for the next three months to the Solidarity Fund.”
The Solidarity Fund was recently established as a public-private partnership to enable individuals and organisations to contribute to slow the spread of Covid-19, support those whose lives have been disrupted by the health crisis and to assist the country’s economic recovery.
