Global technology company MAXAM specialises in the manufacture and distribution of energetic materials.

As a value-creation company, MAXAM strives to develop the most advanced adaptive solutions to ensure quality, safety, environmental care and improved productivity.

MAXAM’s success is based on its global experience, a deep understanding of local markets, strong local capabilities and a set of unique technologies and technical knowledge that enables large cost-reduction opportunities. Being a global company, MAXAM is able to better guarantee security of supply and cost stability of raw materials, which all ultimately benefit the customers they service.

South African subsidiary MAXAM Dantex, together with the Zambian and Angolan sub-sidiaries, services the Southern African region with a comprehensive product portfolio, including bulk and cartridge explosives, initiating systems and accessories.

Bulk Explosives

MAXAM’s bulk explosive, RIOFLEX®, is a highly energetic, robust, flexible density bulk water gel explosive. RIOFLEX® crosslinks in the blast hole, reducing product migration and limiting stemming dilution. The high-level of control in the formulation mitigates uncontrolled blasts, fly-rock incidents and reduces post-blast fumes. RIOFLEX®’s superior product energy offers opportunities for expanded drilling patterns, improved fragmentation and overall cost savings for drilling, blasting, secondary breaking, loading, hauling, crushing and milling.

Cartridge Explosives

MAXAM manufactures numerous cartridge explosives for specific applications. RIOGEL SB®, is a new high-precision, affordable explosive product featuring a gel structure with a hard consistency and rubberlike flexibility, thanks to its unique cross-linking agents. RIOGEL SB® provides consistent long-term water resistance and features high detonation pressure for initial crack development and good gas volume for heave and displacement of the burden.

Another locally manufactured cartridge explosive RIOSPLIT®, or SPLITEX®, has a unique design, ideally suited for smooth blasting in opencast mines and quarries. It consists of a continuous string of water gel explosive cartridges, with an internal line of detonating cord and an external strainer cord. RIOSPLIT® has a high velocity of detonation of 7200 m/s and is perfectly adapted for pre-splitting in open cast and quarry environments for high wall stability.
