Matlosana Mall to open October 23
The R1-billion, 65 000 m² Matlosana Mall, in Klerksdorp, in the North West, was on schedule to officially open on October 23, owner Redefine Properties said on Tuesday.
The mall included 145 stores, and was already about 90% let, with the remaining leases under negotiation.
Redefine noted that its investment in this project was also driving growth of a vibrant new node, with residential development, and convenience and value shopping planned adjacent to the centre.
Redefine development director Mike Ruttell explained that the mall was conveniently located at the eastern entrance to the town and strategically positioned as the catalyst of the N12 development corridor.
As part of the development, Redefine was also building two access points from the N12 highway closest to Klerksdorp, and an extra third lane for the highway adjacent to the mall’s boundary.
“These access points and road works have always formed part of the mall’s viability. After some initial delays, all approvals and wayleaves were put into place by working closely together with the South African National Roads Agency, the city and adjacent infrastructure developer Isago,” Ruttell said.
The two Matlosana Mall highway access points were scheduled for completion shortly before the mall opens.
The easy access to the mall would make it convenient for shoppers from surrounding towns, especially for those in the growth node that stretched between Klerksdorp and Stilfontein and was earmarked as a vital economic growth area in the region, Redefine said.
In addition to the 2 000 temporary jobs created during the 19-month construction period, the mall would also provide 1 500 permanent jobs once open.
