JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Platinum miner Lonmin said on that Wednesday arbitration hearings to resolve an union recognition dispute with the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) had been postponed to next month to allow for industry-wide negotiations to continue.

The arbitration hearing, which was meant to take place on Wednesday, would continue on July 29 at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA), pending the outcome of the Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe-led collaboration on a draft framework agreement on the mining sector.

Lonmin and AMCU headed to arbitration after failing to agree on a new majority union recognition agreement providing AMCU with full organisational rights.

“The company is striving to reach an agreement which is in the best interests of all its employees and has made reasonable offers in discussions with AMCU in an attempt to achieve this,” Lonmin said in a statement, adding that continued negotiations would result in a resolution.

AMCU last week halted a proposed strike pending the outcome of business, government and labour’s meeting with Motlanthe.
