Lockerby suspension lifted, First Nickel starts recalling workforce
TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – Following the tragic death on Tuesday of two contract drillers at TSX-listed First Nickel’s Lockerby mine, in Ontario, the provincial Labour Ministry on Thursday lifted the suspension of underground operations in all areas of the mine, except for the level where the accident occurred.
Access to the level on which a fall-of-ground incident killed Marc Methe (34) and Norm Bissaillon (49) remained restricted following an underground inspection by the Ministry on Wednesday.
Both men worked for Taurus Drilling Services.
First Nickel said that it would continue to facilitate the ongoing investigation into the accident, which could continue for an undetermined length of time. The company is also providing counselling to First Nickel staff and family in the wake of the accident.
Meanwhile, the company said it would start recalling its workforce on Thursday afternoon. Before resuming operations, employees would be reintegrated into the worksite through a series of sessions designed to provide a safety reorientation, aimed at reconfirming First Nickel’s commitment to providing a safe working environment for employees and contractors.
Local news outlet NorthernLife.ca on Thursday reported that Earthquakes Canada, a department of Natural Resources Canada that records seismic activity, did not pick up any seismic activity readings in Sudbury around the time of the incident.
The incident highlighted the issue of mine safety in Ontario, where a comprehensive province-wide mining health, safety and prevention review is currently under way.
