Project Description
The project involves the construction of an energy storage system demonstration project using the power grid in the UK’s Orkney Islands.
The project aims to demonstrate power supply stabilisation in the region by introducing a cargo container-type large-capacity energy storage system using a lithium-ion rechargeable battery, which has a maximum power output capacity of 2 MW.
The energy storage system, which will be installed at Scottish Hydro Electric Power Distribution’s Kirkwall power station, has the capacity to store about 800 kWh nominal and 500 kWh normal use, consists of two 12.9-m-long container units for the batteries and a 12.9-m-long container unit for the power conditioning system.
Each battery container houses more than 2 000 units of lithium-ion rechargeable batteries. The power conditioning system container houses a system for the conversion of direct current or alternating current and the associated input or output controls.

The demonstration project will be conducted with the support of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation of Japan.
Duration
The storage system is expected to be handed over for operational use in early 2013.
