JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Harmony Gold on Friday said that discussions with unions about the reopening of its Kusasalethu mine were ongoing.

The company had not reopened the mine after its closure over the Christmas holiday amid fears of violence and intimidation among workers.

The miner engaged Kusasalethu employees, represented by the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union, the National Union of Mineworkers, Solidarity and Uasa on February 6 and February 7 to discuss a draft agreement containing the conditions under which the mine could be reopened.

Another meeting was scheduled for February 11.

The temporary closure of Kusasalethu due to safety and security reasons remained in place.

However, in February, Harmony CEO Graham Briggs said he was confident the mine would be operating at full production by the end of the June quarter.
