Kumba to embark on R4.2bn resettlement plan as part of Sishen expansion
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Kumba Iron Ore on Thursday said it planned to relocate the Dingleton community to Kathu, as the miner expands its Sishen mine.
The iron-ore miner’s mine recovery and optimisation plan would phase in production increases – extending to the west of Sishen mine – from 30-million tonnes in 2013 to 37-million tonnes in 2016.
The group’s R4.2-billion, four-to-six-year community resettlement plan would see it building more than 500 houses, new pre-primary and primary schools and new sports facilities, while improving municipal libraries.
“A hallmark of this project is the extent of participation and positive contribution by local government and community representatives – with an extensive consultation at every step of the process,” Kumba CEO Norman Mbazima said in a statement.
He explained that the company had concluded a comprehensive feasibility study and an extensive consultation process with affected parties, the community and the relevant government departments.
Kumba had committed to covering the cost of all relocation and property transfers, the difference in property taxes and rates for 25 years and all capital gains tax that private property owners incur as a result of the resettlement.
“Any existing businesses or livelihoods directly affected by the move will also be addressed as a part of the process,” the company stated.
Most Dingleton residents, who would gain a range of financial and other benefits to ease the transition, have already indicated their support for the resettlement, according to Kumba.
