South African low cost carrier Kulula, one of the brands of the Comair group, announced on Tuesday that it was reinstating its route between Johannesburg and East London. Flights on this route would resume on September 4.

“We have listened to our customers who have been eagerly awaiting for us to reintroduce flights to East London,” said Kulula sales and marketing executive head Brian Kitchin. “We are pleased to now be able to offer travellers more choice when travelling to and from the beautiful Eastern Cape.”

The flights will be operated twice a week, on Saturdays and Sundays. The airline pointed out in its press release that its website could be used to book holidays and not just flights.

“The timing could not have been more perfect, as we celebrate Tourism Month in September,” he highlighted. “As this year’s United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) theme for World Tourism Day Celebrations indicates – Tourism for inclusive growth – we believe by reintroducing [Kulula] flights on the East London route [we] will help rejuvenate domestic tourism to this region.”

Kulula has developed three ‘bundled’ fare alternatives. ‘Fly Light’ is for people with only cabin luggage (‘hop-on, hop-off’); should a change of booking be required, a fee of R299 would be payable. The ‘Pack & Go’ fare includes one piece of check-in luggage (with a weight of up to 20 kg) but which allows two free changes of bookings. The ‘Fully Loaded’ fare includes two pieces of check-in luggage, unlimited changes of bookings, plus ‘Q-Jump’ privileges for faster check-in.
