Kerswill appointed chair of World Green Building Council
Green Building Council South Africa (GBCSA) executive chairperson Bruce Kerswill has been elected the chairperson of the World Green Building Council (WGBC), after leading the charge for the formation of the local council in 2007.
During his involvement with the WGBC, Kerswill championed the cause for social and environmental impacts to be included in the concept of green building for developing countries, and played an integral role in facil-itating the formation of the Africa Regional Network of Green Building Councils.
The WGBC aims to facilitate the global transformation of the building industry towards sustainability and currently has 100 Green Building Councils (GBCs) from other countries as members.
It further assists new GBCs and promotes interaction in its network, as well as provides leadership on common global issues.
Kerswill, a former town and regional planner, cofounded property management group Spire Property Group – where he continues to hold the position of MD – and assembled the Paramount Property Fund, listing it on the JSE in 2001. More recently, he played an inte- gral role in the formation and listing of the Tower Property Fund, the first fund to list on the JSE under the Real Estate Invest-ment Trust structure. Kerswill’s involvement with the WGBC will afford the GBCSA continued and improved access to international resources, information, insight and skills. “I believe [that the WGBC] is one of the most effective organ-isations in addressing climate change and effecting change on the ground,” Kerswill comments.
