Kayelekera walls breached by former Paladin employees
PERTH (miningweekly.com) - Uranium miner Paladin on Monday admitted to shareholders that a group of former employees had forcibly entered the Kayelekera mine site late last week, to seek remediation on issues regarding commercial banks.
The mine said some 32 recently retrenched employees had gained access to the site and complained over the decision by commercial banks in Malawi to withhold severance payments for outstanding loans owed to the bank by some ex-employees.
Paladin said that while police reinforcements were called and the secure areas at the mine site placed under lock-down, the group did not attempt to gain access to these areas and the situation remained peaceful.
The Kayelekera management met with the group and provided individuals with letters addressed to the relevant banks, requesting sympathetic consideration. The group was then escorted off site.
In late January, Paladin reduced some 110 of its staff at the Kayelekera mine as part of a cost reduction initiative across the business.
