JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Labour-embattled Impala Platinum (Implats) has appointed Nelson Ndlala as the new executive head of its Rustenburg operations, with immediate effect, rendering the mining engineer responsible for the running of the mine.

Reporting directly to CEO Terence Goodlace, Ndlala would also serve as a member of the executive committee, as well as represent the company on several of its operational boards.

He boasts extensive gold and platinum mining experience, having joined Implats in 2005 as a senior mine manager and soon advancing to oversee a number of the Rustenburg shaft complexes as GM.

During his tenure with the company, Ndlala also served as the head of technical services, leading the company’s engineering, planning, ventilation, rock engineering, training, safety and risk initiatives at the Rustenburg operation.

In addition to his engineering degree, Ndlala has a MBL degree from the University of South Africa and recently completed an executive development programme at the Harvard Business School in Boston, in the US.

He is also a long serving member of the Association of Mine Managers
of South Africa, currently serving as president of the association.
