ICT Policy Review panel engages govt departments
The Department of Communications- (DoC-) assembled ICT Policy Review Panel on Tuesday met with government departments to assess the progress made in local information and communications technology (ICT) development.
Senior managers from the departments of Science and Technology, Basic Education, Higher Education and Training, Health, Trade and Industry, Home Affairs, Public Service and Administration and Arts and Culture outlined what developments their respective departments had made in ICT, as well as their priorities, at a DoC-hosted interdepartmental stakeholder workshop on ICT.
Panel chairperson Joe Mjwara said the departments also noted what was needed to ensure that service delivery was faster and more efficient.
The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa and the State Information Technology Agency also attended.
The workshop marked the start of the next phase of public engagements by the ICT Policy Review Panel, after initially inviting input from South Africans through written submissions.
“Ultimately, the work of the ICT Policy Review Panel has to result in policy and legislation that benefits civil society, business and the State far more; that is robust [enough] to withstand cyberattacks and is of a quality and cost that is comparable with similar developing countries,” said Communications Minister Yunus Carrim.
The newly appointed Minister said that, within government, a lot of ICT development work was under way that the panel needed to “tap into” as it developed a comprehensive ICT policy overhaul.
“The department will give every material and other support to the panel to ensure that it finishes its work within the deadlines and produces work of the necessary quality,” he concluded.
