ICON Group ends 2020 on a high note with successful project for leading local motor group

The ICON Group overcame tough competition earlier this year, to be awarded the contract for demolitions and earthworks for the Jaguar showroom in Bryanston, Johannesburg. The company’s scope of work is now nearing completion, set to be handed over before the close of business and industry this year.
“Having worked on two showrooms across the road for previous projects, I think our knowledge of the area and our ability to work without disrupting existing infrastructure is what put as ahead when bidding for the contract,” explains Wayne Neary, ICON Group MD. Despite a difficult year across all industries and sectors, ICON has proudly maintained a steady project pipeline of earthworks, civil works, and demolitions.
With this particular project, SMH Group required additional floorspace for their showroom for Jaguar and Landrover vehicles. In addition, the basement space needed to be effectively doubled. “We were able to complete the excavation without disruption to the existing basement and have now seamlessly expanded the underground area to the client’s specifications,” says Neary. He said he is delighted to have worked with this successful, local company to meet the needs of their growing business. “The SMH Group is one of the largest independently owned motor groups in South Africa, and a leading provider of new prestigious cars, used vehicles and car hire. We are glad to add this project to our growing portfolio of work.”
Working in the built-up area of northern Johannesburg, the ICON team had to ensure they mitigated noise and dust, and ensured that utilities were not interrupted for the surrounding buildings. Neary’s team rose to the challenge and completed the R3-million project in just eight weeks while adhering to the necessary Covid-19 health and safety protocols.
On every project, the ICON Group takes precautions regarding recycling or reuse of building material, cognisant that the construction industry is prominent contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. “For this project, we ensured that the rubble from the demolished structures was crushed for reuse as aggregate. We are fortunate to have state-of-the-art hydraulic crushers which handle just about anything we can throw at it, so it can all be done on-site,” explains Neary.
With completion expected by 15 December, the ICON team looks forward to a well-deserved festive break before resuming their numerous exciting projects in the new year.
