TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – Canada’s Iamgold has started the gold processing plant at the Westwood mine, in Quebec, and said it expected about 140 000 oz of gold from the plant during the remainder of the year.

The company on Thursday said the plant would at first process stockpiled ore from the adjacent 30-year-old Mouska mine, which would account for about 80 000 oz, after which it would process ore from the new Westwood mine, which would account for about 60 000 oz of gold this year.

The first gold pour, which was expected at the end of the month, would likely be sold to a refinery in the second quarter, the company said.

"We are building a solid reputation for our success in starting up mines on time and on budget. Our previous start-up was in mid-2010 at the Essakane mine, in Burkina Faso, six months ahead of schedule,” senior VP for project development Denis Miville-Deschênes said.

Iamgold president and CEO Steve Letwin added: "The same in-house engineering team who constructed Essakane, has now completed the development of the Westwood mine and refurbishment of the old Doyon plant to process Westwood ore. The team's success increases our confidence in our capability to meet our 2013 production guidance.”

Meanwhile, the company earlier in the month said it would reduce company-wide costs by $100-million.

The company on Thursday said it would this year reduce operations expenses by $43-million, exploration expenses by $40-million, general and administrative expenses by $11-million and corporate general and administrative expenses by $6-million.
