Group of 11 W African miners welcome Obama’s intensified Ebola fight
DENVER, Colorado (miningweekly.com) – A group of eleven miners operating in West Africa on Tuesday welcomed US President Barack Obama’s Monday announcement that the US would allocate significant additional resources to the region to contain and reverse the current outbreak of the Ebola virus, bolstering additional resources announced by various other governments in recent weeks.
Several West African countries were dealing with the worst outbreak of Ebola the world had ever seen and coordination and support from the international community was critical if it was to be contained and ultimately eradicated.
President Obama on Tuesday called West Africa's deadly Ebola outbreak a looming threat to global security and announced a major expansion of the US's role in trying to halt its spread, including the deployment of 3 000 troops to the region.
“This announcement is a major step to ensuring this outcome and we would like to express our gratitude to President Obama and the US government for recognising the severity of the situation and allocating such significant resources to the fight against Ebola,” the group, comprising African Mining Services, ArcelorMittal, Aureus Mining, Dawnus Group, Golden Veroleum Liberia, Hummingbird Resources, Iamgold, London Mining, MonuRent, Newmont Mining and Randgold, said in a joint statement.
As the situation continued to deteriorate on a daily basis, the group hoped that these resources would reach the ground as soon as possible. “We are ready to support the efforts in whatever way we can,” they said.
The group represented some of the largest private employers in West Africa, all of whom remain committed to the region. The group was formed to raise awareness of the need to do more to stop the spreading of Ebola.
Earlier this month, the group urged the international community to step up the fight against Ebola, and welcomed President Obama’s decision to send US support to the region.
