Project Description
The Commercial Phase 1 of the initiative is increasing the number of aquaculture production facilities to enable it to produce 2 640 t/y of catfish.
The project involves the construction of an additional three ponds, a commercial scale hatchery and a preprocessing line in one of the biggest aquaculture investments in South Africa to date.
On completion of Phase 1, the initiative will boast ten aquaculture production systems, a commercial scale hatchery, a processing facility and small-scale training facilities for farming and factory operations.
Value
Commercial Phase 1 is estimated at R100-million, with the Development Bank of Southern Africa’s Green Fund having approved an additional R23.5-million for the construction of an additional three ponds.
Duration
Construction began in February and at completion of Commercial Phase 1, the on-site ponds should produce 2 640 t/y of fish.
