Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan on Monday said his predecessor Nhlanhla Nene’s recent refusal to allow South African Airways to amend its contract with Airbus stood.

Back in the portfolio after days of extraodinary upheaval following Nene’s sacking, Gordhan told a media briefing he would call controversial SAA chairperson Dudu Myeni within 24 hours.

He said after that “telephonic conversation”, the matter would stand over to the new year.

Gordhan did not touch on a deadline of December 21 imposed by Airbus for the deal to be finalised.

Observers and insiders have said Nene’s stance on the deal was part of Zuma’s reasons for summarily removing him from the key portfolio last Wednesday.
