Name of the Project
Gautrain 2 project.

Location
Gauteng, South Africa.

Client
Gauteng Roads and Transport Department and Gauteng Management Agency.

Project Description
The project involves the expansion of Gautrain rapid rail link.

The proposed project will include a link from the existing Gautrain Park station to Westgate; a link from the existing Gautrain Rhodesfield station to Boksburg; a link from the existing Gautrain Sandton station to Randburg and Honeydew; and a link from Naledi, in Soweto, to Mamelodi, in Tshwane, through either the proposed Gautrain Samrand station, or the existing Gautrain Midrand station.

Ultimately, the plan is to have four rail lines – built by either the GMA, the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa or another rail operator – adding to the Pretoria–Johannesburg and Sandton–OR Tambo International Airport links.

The expansion could result in 200 km of new railway line and eight new stations being built.

The possible rail extensions to the Gautrain network follow from the Gauteng 25-Year Integrated Transport Master Plan (ITMP25), which provides a long-term plan that will ensure  the integration of transport with spatial patterns between various transport modes to transport people efficiently.

Jobs to be Created
The proposed expansion of the Gautrain rail system has the capacity to create about 211 000 direct jobs.

Latest Developments
The GMA has completed the feasibility study for the expansion of the railway.

The feasibility has shown that Gautrain 2 could potentially create an estimated R1.6-billion spend on skills, and enterprise and supplier development. Local spend on the project could reach up to R79-billion, of which 40%, or about R31-billion, would be to the benefit of black-owned enterprises.

GMA CEO Jack van der Merwe has said that the GMA has applied for National Treasury approval of the project as a public–private partnership project in terms of the Public Finance Management Act.

National Treasury will evaluate the feasibility study on factors such as affordability and value for money.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
SMEC Consortium, comprising SMEC South Africa, DLA Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr and Deloitte (feasibility study).

On Budget and on Time?
