Gas company Air Liquide has invested R100-million in the expansion of its existing production plant in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

The plant expansion is scheduled for commissioning during 2013 and will substantially increase the production capacity of liquid nitrogen and oxygen and meet the growing demand of the province’s industrial merchant and medical markets, while increasing security of supply to all its existing customers.

The plant is being designed and manufactured by Air Liquide’s own engineering and construction teams, using the company’s latest technologies, which offer high levels of energy savings, efficiency and reliability.

This investment follows many others by Air Liquide, including the largest argon plant in Mpumalanga, which is also the largest in Africa, and a new air-separation unit at Evraz Highveld Steel & Vanadium, in eMalahleni, Mpumalanga.

This large plant will meet Evraz Highveld Steel’s requirements and produce nitrogen, oxygen and argon for the South African gas market.

Air Liquide operates in 20 countries in the industrial gases, steel, automotive, pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals and glass industries, as well as in the engineering, construction and healthcare markets.
“Air Liquide continues to support the growth of KZN through this new investment in operations and will continue to invest in South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa, reinforcing the company’s status as a fast- growing industrial gas company,” says Air Liquide CEO Laurent Langellier.
