A new fibre deal will accelerate open- access fibre operator Frogfoot Network’s expansion ambitions and enhance its fibre infrastructure presence in multidwelling residential and business complexes.

The group acquired the existing network and customer base of Blitz Fibre and entered into an exclusive partnership with the company to accelerate the roll-out of fibre in multidwelling units across the country.

“Frogfoot encountered Blitz in Port Elizabeth and Richards Bay, and, instead of duplicating the fibre network, we decided to partner with them instead,” says Frogfoot CEO Abraham van der Merwe.

As Frogfoot did not acquire the company itself, the partnership will see Blitz focus on acquiring and building fibre infrastructure in multidwelling units for Frogfoot on an exclusive basis.

The deal will enable Frogfoot to pass 15 000 homes, bringing the total homes passed to 102 000 as of August 2019, bolstering its already extensive footprint across South Africa and connecting thousands of businesses and homes in most small and major cities.

Blitz boasts a presence in Gauteng, the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

“We were impressed with the Blitz team’s ability to secure and build multi-dwelling units and their ability to scale in such a short space of time and this was one of the key drivers of the acquisition,” he adds.

The acquisition will also open up opportunities for new Internet service providers (ISPs) to sell their services across a much larger network nationally.

Frogfoot has over 70 ISPs providing services on the network to homes and businesses.

Frogfoot’s footprint extends across Cape Town, Pretoria, Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein, George and parts of KwaZulu-Natal, with expansions into Kimberley, East London and Nelspruit under way.

The group is also undertaking a major project to provide 20 000 homes in Protea Glen, Soweto, with fibre.
