The European Commission has unveiled its first Soil Atlas of Africa to encourage the sustainable use of soil resources on the continent.

The atlas, an initiative of the European Union, the African Union and the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organisation, comprised full colour maps and illustrations explaining the diversity and importance of soil.

The atlas, which outlined the origin, types, functions and relevance of soil resources, aimed to raise awareness at all levels of the significance of soil life.

“The soils of Africa have a crucial role [to play] in climate change adaption and mitigation policies, and they are the basis for sustainable development and food security,” said European Commissioner for climate action Connie Hedegaard in a statement.

The commission revealed that about 60% of Africa’s land surface comprised drylands and deserts, while the remainder held old, highly weathered soils requiring special attention for agricultural use.
