The Grootvlei power station’s Unit 1 has been returned to service following a fire last week that resulted from the failure of generator brushes, costing State-owned energy utility Eskom some 200 MW of electricity.

This came after the Koeberg nuclear station’s 900 MW Unit 2 was returned to service and was almost at full capacity, following a two-month scheduled shutdown for refuelling, inspection and maintenance.

Meanwhile, Eskom reported that the system would remain tight for the next few days owing to higher energy demand associated with the colder weather conditions.

Peak demand for the rest of this week was forecast at 31 877 MW on Friday, 31 052 MW on Saturday, 31 257 MW on Sunday, 33 820 MW on Monday, 33 768 MW on Tuesday and 33 788 MW on Wednesday.
