State-owned power utility Eskom this week announced that it had exceeded its electrification target for the second quarter of the current financial year, steadily moving towards its targeted 207 332 connections by year-end.

During the second quarter of the 2017 financial year, Eskom reported achieving 101 067 connections, 99 991 of which were energised, against a target of 97 513 for the year-to-date, Eskom distribution group executive Mongezi Ntsokolo said in a statement.

This followed the National Treasury’s February allocation of some R17.6-billion to Eskom and municipalities for the roll-out of the electrification programme to over 800 000 households over the next three years.

A further 70 000 households will be connected through nongrid technologies.

Eskom had placed a special focus on the Eastern Cape, Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal to address backlogs.
