A severely constrained power system on Thursday led State-owned power utility Eskom to declare its fourth emergency of 2014. It later instituted rotational load shedding for the second time this winter.

“The power system is currently severely constrained, meaning that any extra load or faults in the system are likely to result in load shedding,” the utility warned in a media statement.

The power utility resorted to load shedding on Wednesday night after warning of a supply shortage.

Two emergencies were announced on February 20 and 21, which were lifted fairly quickly without load shedding being implemented.

This was followed by a nationwide blackout on March 6 – the first time that the utility had resorted to rotational load shedding since the country’s power crisis of 2008.

Eskom, which reiterated its intention to use “all means necessary” to keep the lights on, warned of load shedding to protect the national grid from a total shutdown should demand not decrease urgently.
