DTI welcomes new industrial policy programme at UJ
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on Thursday welcomed the introduction of a Master of Philosophy degree programme in Industrial Policy at the University of Johannesburg (UJ).
The latest course, which was a joint initiative between UJ and the African Institute for Economic Development and Planning, aimed to develop specialised human resource capacity that would unlock the design and implementation of robust industrial policies and strategies that could set African countries on the path of sustained development and structural transformation.
The programme would strengthen the capacity of African policy officials to conceptualise, design, implement, monitor and evaluate industrial policies and strategies in “an age of intense multilevel globalisation”.
The launch of the programme emerged at an “opportune time” when industrial policy re-emerged alongside national development planning and regional integration as core strategies for achieving structural transformation across the continent, said DTI industrial development policy and strategy adviser Nimrod Zalk.
“As a department, we are excited about the programme as it provides an important intellectual platform for its graduates to contribute to the industrial policy debate and engage with the complex issues involved,” he said.
Manufacturing remained the engine of growth and job creation for developing countries and enabled the critical industrialisation of a country.
