Do More Foundation collaborates to do more on World Food Day
This article has been supplied.
The 16th October, World Food Day, marks a very special occasion for humanity, a day when people from around the world come together to declare their commitment to eradicate worldwide hunger. Hunger is not a crisis one should expect in this century and despite South Africa’s status as a middle-income country, high levels of food insecurity persist, yet a third of all food produced globally is wasted.
Currently 2.5 million young children in South Africa are living below the food poverty line, with many of them victims of malnutrition and stunting, due to living in households where there is not enough money to cover even basic nutritional needs. One of the most successful methods to break the inter-generational cycle of poverty and inequality is improving the health and nutrition of young children.
The DO MORE FOUNDATION founded by RCL FOODS, understands the importance of investing in early childhood development and have established many projects in some of the most impoverished communities of South Africa. Eradicating all forms of malnutrition requires a multisectoral approach across a child’s life course, involving multiple government department, NGO’s, corporates and other stakeholders.
This multi-stakeholder, collaborative approach is exactly what the Foundation is about.
This year during the FirstRands beyond painting classrooms conference, the Foundation took home the Collaborative Partnership and Change Award for the collaborative way in which they approach their work.
Through catalysing collaborative partnerships, the Foundation has inspired over 40 companies to participate in their World Food Day Campaign to break a world record by making 100 000 peanut butter sandwiches in one hour.
A hopeful future can only be realised by working together to improve the lives of children in South Africa, a sentiment strongly supported by the Foundation. Together we can #DoMore.
