Disputes are characterising this year’s wage negotiations between the gold unions and the Chamber of Mines of South Africa. First the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), Solidarity and Uasa declared a dispute against the chamber and then the chamber took the unprecedented step of declaring a dispute against the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), which has forced AMCU to be heard together with the National Union of Mineworkers, the majority union in the gold-mining industry, Solidarity and Uasa, by Afzul Soobedaar of the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA). AMCU, which represents a minority 17% of gold workers, has agreed to present itself at the CCMA, which has August 13 and 21 as its next key dates.
