Copper theft index falls to its lowest level – Sacci
The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s (Sacci’s) Copper Theft Barometer reached its lowest ever level in May, with the value of copper stolen dropping to R9-million, down from R9.9-million in April and R10-million in March.
The chamber stated that this was a clear indication that copper-theft crime-fighting strategies were gaining momentum.
Further, the volume of copper stolen decreased to 132 t in May, down from 150 t in April.
Sacci pointed out that the international spot price for copper had dropped to a monthly average of $7 094/t in June from $7 237/t in May, representing the lowest value for the metal since July 2010.
However, it warned that the volatility of the copper price was pronounced, given that the latest 12-month peak was in February at a monthly average of $8 062/t, 13.6% higher than the June estimate.
Meanwhile, copper waste exports increased to $36.8-million in February from $35.1-million in January, which Sacci said was most likely a market response to the strong copper price at the start of the year.
“The outlook remains positive for the medium to long term. One proxy for this relationship is the relationship between the copper price and exports of scrap copper products. The trend in official exports of copper waste normally lags the price trend by a few months, so the current significant contraction in the price should [result in] a downward impact on criminal activity for the next two to three months,” the chamber stated.
