Continental granted mining right for De Wittekrans
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – South Africa-focused Continental Coal has been granted a mining right, over its De Wittekrans coal project, by the Department of Mineral Resources.
CEO Don Turvey said on Friday that the grant of the mining right was a significant milestone for the project, and for the company, ahead of taking the project into production during the next 12 months.
The De Wittekrans project was expected to deliver some 3.6-million tonnes a year of thermal coal from a major opencast and underground mine, and would operate over an initial mine-life of some 30 years.
Recently completed optimisation studies have determined a phased development of the project, with an initial seven-year opencast mining operation, would be followed by an underground development, which would start in the third production year.
Continental Coal submitted its application for the new-order mining right in 2010, and also submitted an application for an integrated water use licence during the fourth quarter of last year.
The approval for the integrated water use license was expected by the first quarter of next year.
A development decision on the De Wittekrans project was expected during the second half of this year.
The project would be Continental’s fourth producing mine and had the potential to double the yearly run-of-mine production, as well as export and domestic thermal coal sales.
