The South African Federation of Civil Engineering Contractors (Safcec) and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) on Monday signed a two-year wage agreement, ending prolonged strike action in the construction industry that halted major build programmes.

The substantive agreement allows for a wage increase of 10% for employees in Task Grade 1 to 4 and 9% for employees in Task Grade 5 to 9.

An interim wage adjustment, effective from March 2014, of between 1.45% and 2.14% will also be granted to employees in Task Grade 1 to 4.

In year two of the agreement, employees will be granted a wage increase of 10% in Task Grade 1 to 4 and 9% in Task Grade 5 to 9, effective September 2014.

NUM members started resuming their duties following news of the draft agreement, which was sent to the NUM on September 12, with NUM construction sector coordinator Isaac Ntshangase confirming to Engineering News Online that, by Monday morning, all striking NUM members had returned to work.

Striking NUM members at the Kusile and Medupi projects, as well as the Durban Port expansion project, were among those who returned to work.

The wage deal follows an agreement struck between Safcec and the Building, Construction and Allied Workers Union on September 3, in which members would receive an increase of between 8% and 10%.
