Companies urged to secure domains ahead of dotAfrica launch
With the evolution of digital and mobile marketing proving the worth of the Internet in Africa, domain management company ZA Central Registry COO Neil Dundas says it is critical that brand managers be aware of the value of their virtual real estate, or web domain.
“Many brands have been burnt in the past by not thinking ahead and registering domains that could be of value to them in their digital marketing strategies.
“This costly mistake has, in some cases, cost major international brands more than they would care to admit and is a situation that we urge brand managers to avoid entirely,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.
Dundas’ comments came as the continent was gearing up for the launch of the dotAfrica domain in May.
He stressed that brand managers needed to be aware of the launch to secure their domains as they became available.
At present, governments across the continent were reserving dotAfrica domains for their countries and, following this process, major international brands would be able to apply for their share of the African Internet space.
Brand managers wishing to take advantage of the priority rights registration mechanism needed to make use of the global Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH) or the local Mark Validation System (MVS).
Once a mark had been submitted for validation into the MVS, the mark holder would automatically be notified of the start of the dotAfrica Sunrise Phase, and would be able to apply for a dotAfrica domain name corresponding to any word mark validated by either the TMCH or MVS.
Dispute resolution existed for brands that believed domains registered by rival companies infringed on the protection of their brand.
