The City of Cape Town is nearing the successful completion of an electricity meter upgrade programme across the city ahead of the December deadline, when the current prepaid electricity metering software for all prepaid meters will expire.

All municipalities across the country have been mandated to undertake prepaid electricity meter software upgrades by December or customers will be unable to recharge their units through their meters.

The Cape Town metro has updated about 604 500 meters, with officials remaining on standby to assist residents with their updates where needed and revisiting any meters that have not been updated.

The city explains in a release issued on June 25 that eligible customers will notice they are due for the update when they make a purchase and see the update codes.

Customers will receive two 20-digit update codes along with the usual prepaid token.

Cape Town prepaid meters were updated in accordance with an area schedule, with the city being in the final stretch of the update programme.

Notably, the city reiterates that these work teams carry identification and work order numbers to ensure safety for residents, but the city’s call centre can be called on 0860 103 089 for verification.

Power utility Eskom and other municipalities in South Africa have also taken steps to start the updating of meters they are responsible for.
