Cape Town-based company Ontec Systems has developed a smart water management solution to monitor water use in near real time.

The new GaugeIT device, and its linked application, are also equipped with features such as an early leak detection alarm and high-use threshold warnings to avoid inflated monthly water bills.

“GaugeIT allows for the evolution of a smarter, more engaged consumer by empowering them with near-real-time water consumption information directly on their cellphones,” says Ontec Systems chief strategy officer Dhasi Naidoo.

The application enables consumers to closely monitor, on an hourly basis, their water use allowance to prevent reaching the threshold of the daily water restrictions too early and avoid excessive charges with increasing tariffs.

Consumers can also measure water consumption against the received utility bills.

“This enables consumers to make a more informed and conscious decision to change behaviour that will [not only] save them money but also make an impactful difference to the water crisis in the country,” he explains.

Despite the recent rains in the region, dam levels in the Western Cape remain at a critically low point, with the City of Cape Town continuing to tighten legislation around water use.

These include amendments to the water by-law passed on May 31 that now requires landlords to keep a record of consumption for each residential unit and the installation of water conservation and demand management systems for any new developments.
